Spicy Matar Paneer

Paneer, name itself makes me think of various versions of it we make in India. But the version I love most is spicy matar paneer. As I am away from my home, I miss it so much. So planned to make this for some friends coming over, all of them away from their home.

A dish which truly makes me feel at home. Since in US we don't get soft paneer like India, we need to make either paneer at home or use store bought paneer and microwave it a little bit. Cutting short to my blah blah, lets start with the recipe.

Ingredients:

400 gm paneer
1 cup peas
1 large onion - grinded into a paste
4-5 medium sized tomatoes - grinded into a paste
1 piece of ginger - julienne
3-4 garlic cloves - cut into thin slices
2-3 green chilli - roughly chopped into small pieces
1 tbs oil

Spices:
1 tbsp cumin seeds
pinch of hing(asafoetida)
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chilli powder
1 tsp garam masala powder
salt to taste

Recipe:

1. Cut paneer into large rectangle shaped cubes. Place it in a microwave safe bowl and add water so that paneer is sumberged in water. Microwave it for 5 minutes and keep it aside.
2. This step is not necessary but will be good: Fry the paneer until golden brown. Do not fry it too much though otherwise it will become hard.
3. Take a deep frying pan, add 2 tbs oil. Heat it on medium-high.
4. Add garlic, ginger and green chilli to the oil
5. Let them cook and have garlic acquire a very light brown color(Tip: less you cook garlic more flavor it adds)
6. Add cumin seeds and asafoetida
7. Once cumin seed start crackling, add onion paste.
8. Cook until onion paste changes color. At this point add tomato puree.
9. Cook until the mixture starts separating oil.
10. Now add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and mix well.
11. Take paneer and add it along with water to the mixture. Add peas.
12. Add garam masala and salt to taste.
13. Let it boil for another 10 mins or upto the consistency you want it to be.
14. Server hot either with roti or rice.
